About Practice Smarts
Practice Smarts was built by people who have lived the operational reality of running complex organisations — not from the outside, but from the inside, under real pressure, with real consequences.
Why We Exist
Practice Smarts was founded on a straightforward observation: law firms and accounting practices are full of intelligent, capable people who could perform better, enjoy their work more, and build something stronger — if the processes and tools around them were better designed.
We work exclusively with law and accounting firms because we know this world — the partnership culture, the client pressures, and what it actually takes to improve a practice without erasing what makes it work.
Our clients don't hire us because they're failing. They hire us because they're successful — and they want their practice to reflect that, and reinforce it to the people around them.
"Every practice we work with has the same story — built on talent, hard work, and relationships. Without noticing, it outgrows the way it runs."

Dee Marr
Chief Executive Officer
Dee spent her career building things that work — from the inside out. As a senior HR leader and then Operations Manager of a 50-person business, she was the person responsible for making complex organisations actually function. Not advising from the outside, but owning the outcome from within.
She has built process from scratch, restructured roles when the existing ones weren't working, and redesigned communication so that work moved the way it should. She has also led a business through genuine adversity — turning around a company deep in debt, then navigating the damage COVID brought when conditions had finally improved. That kind of experience doesn't come from a textbook.

Roy West
Principal Consultant
Roy has spent twenty years working with business owners — and fifteen of those specifically with law firms and accounting practices through his firm, Business for Lawyers. He understands the commercial reality these principals operate under, what it takes to earn their trust, and what they actually need to hear before they'll consider changing anything.
He has seen what sustained, trusted involvement can deliver. One accounting firm he worked with grew from six staff to thirty over eight years — not through a single intervention, but through the kind of consistent, compounding improvement that only comes when a business owner is genuinely committed to building something better. Before his coaching work, Roy spent three years in process implementation — giving him the operational grounding to match his commercial instincts.

What We've Lived
Dee Marr — Operations
"We turned it around. Then COVID arrived."
Dee led the operational recovery of a business carrying significant debt — rebuilding process, restructuring the team, and restoring momentum. Just as the firm found its footing, COVID changed everything again. Managing through both required the kind of calm, systematic thinking under pressure that no consulting engagement can teach. It's the experience that shapes how she approaches every Practice Flow engagement.
Roy West — Business for Lawyers
"Six staff to thirty. Eight years of trust."
Over eight years, Roy worked alongside the owner of an accounting practice as it grew from a small team of six to a thirty-person firm. That kind of growth doesn't happen through a series of recommendations — it happens through sustained, trusted involvement where the adviser understands the business as well as the owner does. It's the model Roy brings to every Practice Smarts engagement.
Together
Dee brings the operational depth — the experience of building and fixing complex organisations from the inside. Roy brings the professional services relationship — two decades of understanding what law and accounting firm owners need before they'll trust anyone with the way their firm runs.
Between them, they've lived both sides of the problem. That's what Practice Smarts is built on.
We've built process, restructured teams, and improved workflow inside real organisations under real pressure — not in theory, not from the outside.
Fifteen years working exclusively with law firms and accounting practices means we understand the culture, the constraints, and what it takes to earn the trust of a senior principal.
Our best work happens over time — not in a single engagement. We build the kind of relationship where the improvements we make today keep compounding as the firm grows.
We've worked with enough firms to know what shouldn't change. We improve what needs improving — and leave alone what's working.
